Collection: Beth Ross Johnson

Asheville, NC | Exhibiting Since 1981
Beth Ross Johnson began weaving in 1970 and initially learned from students of Norman Kennedy, later studying with himself. A lifelong interest in Asian art led her to two extensive stays in Japan where she worked in a textile factory studying kasuri (ikat) and learning sakiori (rag weaving). Recent explorations have included researching the history of certain technical processes such as European ikat and woven sashiko stitching patterns, writing about them, and incorporating them as layers into art cloths and yardage. Beth is a regular instructor at the JCC Campbell Folk School and Penland School of Craft. She weaves, writes and teaches from her studio in Black Mountain, NC.
