Creating functional and decorative painted tapestries, I use paints that are mostly brush applied on to heavy canvas they’re protected with multiple layers of varnish. Inspiration for the repetitions patterns common in some of my work comes from studying my sketches of plant and animal life, geological formations and landscapes. Sometimes I create the motif through drawing and manipulating abstract shapes. I enjoy the rhythm that is apparent in repeated patterns as well as the surprise of an unexpected color or object. Many times the surface of a piece will appear to be a woven cloth or rug; at other times it will have the effect of hand painted tiles, marble, or masonry. Upon these surfaces I may paint an object that appears to be lying on the finished piece. This further enhances the “trompe L’oeil” effect of the work.
