I am a contemporary jeweler creating simple, elegant forms from patterned metal. The work shown in the submitted images is rooted in Katagami, antique Japanese kimono fabric stencils dating from the 16th to 19th century. I reinterpret these and other historical patterns alongside my own hand-drawn text and imagery to create contemporary surfaces. The patterns are electroetched into metal, lost wax cast or transferred using a rolling mill. The textured metal is then hand-sawn, die-cut, and formed using a combination of hand tools and hydraulic press tooling. Soldering and cold connection techniques complete each piece. Through these processes, I combine historical pattern, handwork, and and contemporary design to create wearable art.
