Geologic formations and the rock stratifications of cuts along expressways have always fascinated me as one of Nature's finest artistic achievements.
My graduate thesis and show at Wayne State University in Detroit focused on coil pots and my early "Strata Pots" were based on these rock formations, mineral deposits, and mountain upheavals. I am again doing a new series of Strata Pots. While different from the early pieces, they have the same inspirations.
When Tyrone and I moved to the Penland area in 1971, we participated with many of the Penland craftspeople, to campaign for ridge laws to prohibit the building of multi-story condos on the tops of the mountain ridges that were proposed at that time. Our efforts resulted in the Ridge Line Laws in Mitchell County that limited the height of any structure to three stories. We are very proud of our early efforts to protect these beautiful mountains.
My long history with Ridge Lines continues with my latest work focusing not only with the mountains themselves, but with the trees and foliage that make them so distinct.
