"As a kid I liked looking at maps and globes, seeing the whole world with the countries and the waters represented.  When I was in grammer school my dad, who was a navigator in the Air Force, brought home a huge wooden map of the world...it was at least 7 feet high and 10 feet across, that they were getting rid of at the base.  My parents put it in the bedroom my brother and I shared and it took up a whole wall.  It was like treasure to me having that map.  My sister when she was in sixth grade made a three dimensional map of the state of California with it's coast line and mountains and valleys and rivers out of a salt dough she applied to a long board and then painted.  It was so big my parents had to drive it to school for her.  I was amazed at her creativity.   When I started working in clay one of the first complicated projects I made was this little globe of the earth.  I tried to glaze it so that it looked reasonably earth-like.  It's almost 30 years old.  I still like maps and globes."
